Kwankwaso weighs in on Tax Reform Bills controversy, tells Tinubu what to do

Rabiu Kwankwaso, the National Leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has called on President Bola Tinubu to reevaluate his position on the proposed Tax Reform Bills, emphasizing the need to prioritize the well-being of Nigerians.

Kwankwaso, a former NNPP presidential candidate, urged Tinubu to follow the example set by former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, who withdrew significant bills for the greater good of the country.

He made his appeal in a statement shared on his X account, cautioning that this is not an ideal time to introduce or revise taxes.

He stated:
“Considering the current economic hardships many Nigerians are enduring, revisiting VAT or imposing new taxes would be unwise.

“The government’s focus should be on providing relief and support, not adding to the financial struggles of the people.

“I encourage President Tinubu to take into account the advice of the National Economic Council and other respected figures.

“Decisions of this nature should prioritize the collective good over personal or political interests.”

Kwankwaso highlighted historical precedents, noting that former presidents Obasanjo and Jonathan made similar decisions for the benefit of the nation.

Obasanjo withdrew the revenue-sharing bill during his second term, while Jonathan, following advice from key leaders like the Senate President and the Speaker of the House, retracted a communication to the 7th National Assembly.

Kwankwaso concluded by urging Tinubu to reconsider the tax reform measures and ensure that the voices and interests of ordinary Nigerians are central to the decision-making process.
