Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex socio-cultural organization of the Igbo people, has thrown its full support behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bills.
The group praised the reforms as a game-changer for Nigeria’s economy, particularly for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and workers, while tackling the challenge of double taxation.
In a statement signed by its Secretary General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and released on Sunday, December 1, 2024, Ohanaeze described the proposed reforms as a critical step toward achieving equitable economic growth in the country.
“These tax reforms present a unique opportunity to revitalize SMEs and improve the livelihoods of Nigerian workers. By addressing the issue of double taxation often perpetuated by some state governors, these measures will create a fair business environment that will attract both local and foreign investments,” the statement read.
Ohanaeze highlighted the particular benefits for the Igbo community, renowned for its entrepreneurial spirit, noting that the reforms could significantly enhance private sector growth and ensure a more balanced regulatory framework.
The group urged Southern lawmakers to unite across party lines to guarantee the swift passage of the bills in the National Assembly.
“It is essential for our Southern legislators to put aside partisan interests and work together to ensure the successful passage of the Tax Reform Bills through both chambers of the National Assembly,” Ohanaeze emphasized.
The organization also criticized opposition from some Northern governors and lawmakers, accusing them of attempting to preserve a VAT derivation system that serves specific interests at the expense of equity.
“If Northern elites succeed in obstructing these reforms, it could set a troubling precedent, undermining meaningful progress and perpetuating injustice,” the group warned.
Ohanaeze reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Tinubu administration, referencing its earlier decision not to join nationwide protests as a sign of collaboration.
“The vision of a prosperous and fair Nigeria is achievable, but it requires a united effort to promote transparency, equity, and sustainable economic growth,” the statement concluded.
