Kano deputy gov urges LG chairmen to prioritize grassroots leadership

The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has called on all 44 local government chairmen in the state to remain steadfast in their respective areas, tackling challenges to ensure effective grassroots administration.

Speaking at the opening of a leadership workshop in Kano, Gwarzo, who also serves as the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, highlighted the critical role of local governments in fostering democracy and development.

The workshop, themed “Leadership and Professional Ethics,” was organized by the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in collaboration with the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON).

Gwarzo emphasized the importance of leadership grounded in accountability and integrity, urging the participants—including Directors of Personnel Management (DPMs) and secretaries—to adopt best practices for effective governance.

He described local governments as the backbone of democracy, stating that their actions significantly impact communities, the state, and the nation.

“As leaders, you must remain present and proactive in your local government areas, overcoming challenges and prioritizing the well-being of your people,” Gwarzo said while reiterating his support for the development of all LGAs in Kano State.

He also commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his dedication to human capital development at the grassroots level.

Conflict Management and leadership skills in focus

The workshop’s curriculum, presented by Chief Dr. Yomi Charles of ASCON, included topics such as conflict management and the qualities of effective leaders.

Dr. Charles noted that conflict is inevitable in administration, urging leaders to adopt transparent and accountable practices while developing skills to resolve disputes effectively.

Zubairu Hamza Masu, Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, also addressed the participants.

Representing the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Jibril Ismail Falgore, Masu suggested that similar workshops be extended to include members of the House and LG chairmen to ensure seamless administration.

Participants commit to improved governance

Several participants expressed gratitude for the workshop’s practical focus. Dr. Mani Tsoho, Chairman of Gwarzo LGA, applauded the Ministry for addressing critical themes like conflict resolution.

Hajiya Sa’adatu Salisu Yusha’u, Chairman of Tudun Wada LGA, shared her enthusiasm for the newfound knowledge on securing and applying for development projects to benefit her community.

Chairmen from Warawa and Dambatta LGAs also commended the initiative, pledging to implement the insights gained to enhance governance and service delivery in their respective areas.

The workshop underlined the administration’s commitment to equipping local government officials with the tools needed to improve governance and drive grassroots development in Kano State.
