A fire outbreak on Friday night caused extensive damage to property worth millions of naira at a spare parts market under the Idumota Bridge in Lagos State.
In a statement on Saturday, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed the incident, stating that the agency was alerted around 10:20 p.m.
The statement explained that emergency response teams from Lekki, Cappa, and the Command and Control Centre in Alausa were immediately deployed following distress calls via the 767/112 emergency lines. Upon their arrival at 10:55 p.m., they found several buildings used for selling car spare parts engulfed in flames.
While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, the blaze destroyed goods and properties valued in the hundreds of millions of naira. Oke-Osanyintolu noted that LASEMA teams, along with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Federal Fire Service, collaborated to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings.
Law enforcement agencies were also present to manage the crowd and ensure safety at the scene.
Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported. Efforts to completely extinguish the fire continued, with dampening operations underway to eliminate residual flames. Recovery efforts to salvage valuable items from affected shops were also ongoing.
