NAFDAC cautions, issues warning to frozen food sellers

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has urged frozen food vendors to cease selling and distributing unregistered or prohibited items.

This call was made during a one-day awareness event held at Kado Fish Market in Abuja on Friday.

NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, represented by Mr. Kenneth Azikiwe, Director of the agency’s FCT Directorate, stressed the importance of halting the import and distribution of banned products to support local farmers and producers of frozen foods.

She reaffirmed NAFDAC’s dedication to eradicating the illegal production, sale, and distribution of unregistered food, water, and other regulated items, highlighting the initiative’s focus on protecting public health, particularly during the holiday season.

“This programme is aimed at promoting proper storage and distribution practices in the market to ensure that food products maintain their quality before they reach consumers,” she stated.

Adeyeye explained that the visit to Kado Fish Market, the largest fish market in North-Central Nigeria, was part of efforts to ensure that frozen fish, chicken, and meat products are stored safely for public consumption.

She also urged market leaders to prioritize purchasing locally manufactured, NAFDAC-approved frozen products to maintain consumer safety and quality standards.

Additionally, she warned that strict penalties await those who defy the government’s ban on importing frozen chicken, turkey, and catfish.

Responding to the campaign, Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammed, Chairman of the Frozen Food Sellers Association at Kado Fish Market, expressed the association’s commitment to supporting NAFDAC’s regulations. He assured the agency of members’ compliance with these policies to enhance public health but called for fairness and understanding in their enforcement.

Meanwhile, NAFDAC has also been inspecting water production facilities across the Federal Capital Territory to ensure producers of sachet and bottled water adhere to hygienic and manufacturing standards.
