The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU) in Bauchi has announced an indefinite strike to press for improved working conditions from the university’s management.
Speaking to journalists after an emergency congress held at the university’s Yuli Campus, the Chairperson of ASUU’s SAZU branch, Comrade Awwal Hussain Nuhu, stated that all efforts to engage the administration on their demands had been unsuccessful.
Nuhu highlighted the congress’s frustration with the lack of commitment from both the university’s leadership and the government, despite multiple attempts to resolve the issues through dialogue.
He said, “A union member proposed a motion for the branch to embark on a total and indefinite strike, which was supported by another member. The congress unanimously resolved to proceed with the strike.”
The strike officially began at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, November 29, 2024. Nuhu instructed all union members to fully comply, stating that no academic activities—including teaching, grading, meetings, or accreditation—would occur while the strike remains in effect.
He emphasized that the strike would continue indefinitely until their demands are addressed.
