Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has vowed to mobilize northern lawmakers to oppose President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bills, which he claims are harmful to the northern region’s economy.
In an interview with the BBC, Zulum criticized the proposed reforms, arguing that they would exacerbate poverty, hunger, and economic hardship in the north. He expressed concerns about the speed at which the legislation is being pushed through the National Assembly.
“These reforms disproportionately benefit Lagos State, the president’s political base, while neglecting the economically vulnerable northern region,” Zulum stated.
The governor reminded President Tinubu of the significant support the north provided during the 2023 presidential election, cautioning against alienating the region.
“He should not dismiss our concerns or ignore the growing sentiment that the north feels sidelined,” Zulum warned.
Zulum also alleged possible backroom deals aimed at swaying lawmakers in favor of the reforms.
“We are concerned that some lawmakers might secretly support the bills due to pressure or financial inducements from political actors,” he added.
