John Adetola, a witness for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), testified on Thursday at the Lagos Special Offences Court in Ikeja, detailing how he delivered $400,000 to Godwin Emefiele, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Adetola, who previously worked as Emefiele’s executive assistant, shared his account before Justice Rahman Oshodi.

This testimony is part of the ongoing trial where Emefiele and his co-defendant, Henry Omoile, face 26 charges, including allegations of financial misconduct and abuse of office, involving sums of $4.5 billion and ₦2.8 billion.

During his statement as the EFCC’s seventh prosecution witness, Adetola—guided by the commission’s prosecutor, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN)—revealed that he had been called back from a new assignment in Ekiti State to testify.

Adetola recounted an incident from 2018, stating, “I received a WhatsApp message from Mr. Eric Odoh instructing me to collect $400,000 from John Ayoh and deliver it to the former CBN Governor in Lagos.”

He further described going to John Ayoh’s residence in Lekki to collect an envelope, which he subsequently handed over to Emefiele at the office.

Adetola also described his duties as an executive assistant, which included managing correspondence, attending to visitors, and handling tasks assigned by Emefiele.

He noted that he joined the CBN in 2014 after working at Veritas Registrars (formerly Zenith Registrars) since 2007.

Adetola highlighted his longstanding professional relationship with Emefiele, whom he knew as the Managing Director of Zenith Bank before the latter’s appointment at the CBN.
