Tinubu commends Okonjo-Iweala on WTO reappointment, cites global confidence in her leadership

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her unanimous re-election as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Dr Okonjo-Iweala, a former Nigerian Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy made history in 2021 as the first African and first woman to lead the 164-member global trade body.

Her reappointment for a second four-year term, set to begin on September 1, 2025, underscores the international community’s trust in her ability to steer the WTO towards advancing multilateral trade for sustainable global development.

President Tinubu described her re-election as a testament to her exceptional leadership and expertise in global finance and development economics.

He expressed confidence that Dr Okonjo-Iweala’s continued leadership would enhance the WTO’s role as a catalyst for inclusive global economic growth and good governance.

As a committed member of the WTO, ECOWAS, and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Nigeria, according to the president, will remain a strong supporter of the WTO’s mission to establish a fair and equitable multilateral trading system.

President Tinubu also assured Dr Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria’s unwavering support as she continues to implement bold reforms, champion equitable trade practices, and foster international cooperation in her second term.
