The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has announced the suspension of the foreign component of its Scholarship for Academic Staff (TSAS) programme, effective January 1, 2025.
The decision was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by TETFund’s Director of Public Affairs, Abdulmumin Oniyangi.
According to Oniyangi, the suspension comes in response to the rising cost of training in foreign institutions and the increasing rate of scholars absconding from their programmes.
However, scholars already enrolled in foreign institutions under the TSAS scheme will continue to benefit from their scholarships until the completion of their studies.
“The suspension is expected to conserve foreign exchange, reduce financial pressure, boost investment in local capacity within Nigerian tertiary institutions, and significantly increase the number of beneficiaries of the intervention,” Oniyangi explained.
To enhance local training, TETFund, in collaboration with the National Universities Commission (NUC), is implementing recently approved Trans-National Education Guidelines. These guidelines aim to foster partnerships between Nigerian institutions and top-ranking universities from countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Malaysia, and Brazil.
Through these partnerships, foreign institutions will deliver programmes in Nigeria that match the quality and standards of their home countries.
Beneficiary institutions have been directed to prioritize local training needs and strictly adhere to this new focus on domestic capacity building.
