The Headquarters of the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, has addressed allegations circulating on social media about the detention of an investigative journalist in Port Harcourt.
The Division, in a statement released by Danjuma Jonah Lieutenant Colonel Acting Deputy Director, 6 Division Army Public Relations, expressed concern over what it described as “baseless claims” and emphasized the need to set the record straight.
According to the Army, recent intelligence uncovered the activities of a notorious gang involved in pipeline vandalism and illegal oil connections in the region.
In a carefully executed operation, troops tracked the suspects to an illegal oil bunkering site, resulting in multiple arrests. Among those apprehended was Mr Fisayo Soyombo, who was reportedly found at the scene of the operation.
The Army stated that Mr. Soyombo and other suspects are currently undergoing preliminary investigations to determine their level of involvement in the illegal activities.
It categorically denied any claims suggesting that Mr Soyombo’s detention was unrelated to its ongoing anti-oil theft efforts.
“The arrest is directly linked to the ongoing operations aimed at curbing illegal oil bunkering in the region. Any contrary claims are false and misleading,” the statement read.
The 6 Division urged media outlets to verify their reports before publication to avoid the spread of misinformation.
It reiterated its commitment to combating criminal activities, particularly oil theft, to protect national resources and boost oil and gas production.
The Division also reassured the public of its dedication to upholding security and invited constructive dialogue to foster transparency and understanding.
