Kaduna workers reject deceitful wage increment as NLC threatens strike

The Kaduna State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has accused the state government of reneging on its promise to implement the ₦72,000 minimum wage.

In a strongly-worded statement, the council condemned the government for what it described as an “arbitrary and insulting increment” in workers’ salaries, failing to reflect the negotiated consequential adjustments.

The union criticized the state government for announcing a wage increase but delivering a measure it deemed insufficient to meet workers’ basic needs.

“This conduct not only undermines the welfare of workers but also constitutes a serious breach of public trust,” read part of the statement signed by Comrade Gado Hussaini Titus, the NLC State Secretary.

During a meeting on Tuesday, 27th November 2024, the NLC’s State Executive Council reaffirmed its commitment to the directive of the National Executive Council, which calls for a strike if any state fails to fully implement the new minimum wage by 30th November.

The NLC has declared 1st December 2024 as the deadline for compliance, warning that non-implementation would provoke industrial action.

The council demanded immediate implementation of the agreed consequential adjustments and urged the government to sign a memorandum of understanding to demonstrate its commitment to workers’ welfare.

“Anything less would constitute a betrayal of the hardworking workforce of the state,” the statement added.

The Kaduna State government has yet to issue a response.

The situation underscores growing tensions between labour unions and state authorities over the national minimum wage policy, with potential industrial action looming on the horizon.
