The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has revealed that Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida (retd.), is among prominent individuals owing land-related fees in Abuja.
According to the FCTA, Babangida owes N152 million for a plot located in the upscale Asokoro district of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
In a list released on November 26, 2024, the FCTA named 9,532 defaulters, including high-profile individuals, federal government agencies, and state governments.
All defaulters have been given a two-week ultimatum to settle their outstanding payments for property and Certificates of Occupancy (C of O).
Among the listed debtors are former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, who owes N950,000 for land in Bazango, a suburban area of Abuja, and Aminu Tambuwal, a serving lawmaker and former governor of Sokoto State, who has an outstanding debt of N18 million for a property in Carraway Dallas, near Asokoro.
The FCTA warned that failure to meet the payment deadline could result in the revocation of land titles.
It emphasized that all payments must be made via e-payment to the FCT Department of Land Administration’s designated account.
The list also includes federal agencies such as the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Police Force, and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU).
Also, state governments like Kaduna and Lagos, along with the Lagos Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro and the State House Abuja, are among the named defaulters.
