Veteran Nigerian Nollywood actor, Kanayo O. Kanayo has expressed support for Afrobeats star Davido following the uproar caused by the singer’s recent remarks on Nigeria’s struggling economy.
AFRIPOST had reported that during a controversial interview, Davido cautioned African Americans against relocating to Africa, highlighting Nigeria’s challenging economic situation.
The comments sparked widespread debate and criticism, with calls for the singer to apologize continuing to grow.
In a video shared on Instagram from the UK, Kanayo urged Nigerians to respect Davido’s freedom of speech.
The actor emphasized that the singer, despite his privileged background as a billionaire, was advocating for the realities faced by ordinary Nigerians. Kanayo dismissed the demands for an apology, calling for understanding of Davido’s perspective.
The veteran actor’s stance has further fueled discussions on the issue, with mixed reactions from fans and the public.
“Nigerians make una leave Davido alone about the comment he made; it’s freedom of speech and he made it in good faith. It is left for those in power to work harder to give us a better Nigeria. We need to build a better Nigeria,” he said partly.
He continued by adding, “Some people say he should apologize; apologize for what? He’s a Nigerian and he made his statement in good faith. Those who criticize us wants the best out of us. Davido and his family can feed well but he speaks for other Nigerians who cannot.”
