Respect our elders – Bode George warns Tinubu’s Aide over comments on Obasanjo

Must read

Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South, Chief Bode George, has criticized Bayo Onanuga, a spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu, for his remarks against former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Speaking during an interview on Nigeria Info FM, George condemned Onanuga’s comments as disrespectful and a breach of Yoruba cultural values, which emphasize reverence for elders.

The controversy began after Obasanjo described Nigeria’s 2023 elections as a “travesty” while speaking at the Chinua Achebe Leadership Forum at Yale University. In response, Onanuga accused the former president of hypocrisy, blaming his administration for Nigeria’s current economic difficulties.

Defending Obasanjo, George noted the former president’s status as an elder statesman and emphasized the importance of respect. “An old man who could be Bayo Onanuga’s father said something, and you insult him. Even if you disagree, Yoruba culture does not permit such behaviour,” he stated.

He further warned Onanuga about the consequences of his actions, saying, “There will be a day after, and on that day, he will pay for this insult. That’s what matters most.”

The exchange has added fuel to the ongoing debate about respect and leadership in Nigerian politics, with cultural and generational values taking center stage.
