Journalists elect Alhassan Yahya as NUJ President, others

Journalists across the country under the platform of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) have elected Comrade Alhassan Yahya as the new President of the union.

The Gombe state born journalist emerged as the new President of the union during the 8th triennial national delegates conference of the union in Imo state.

Our correspondent reports that Yahya emerged during the election held on Wednesday.

Yahya, who was the immediate past National Deputy President of the union, defeated his closest rival and the incumbent Treasurer, Dele Atunbi.

The new President scored a total of 436 votes while Atunbi scored a total of 97 votes.

The third candidate Mohammed Garba scored a total of 39 votes.

Also, a Deputy Director with Radio Nigeria, Mrs. Abimbola Oyetunde has also emerged as the Deputy National President of the union unopposed.

Mrs Ronke Afebioye Samo from Ekiti State Council was re-elected unopposed as the Vice President Zone B.

The National Treasurer, Comrade Victor Ndukwe, who was the former Abia State Council Chairman was returned unopposed.

 

The election, which was conducted amidst tight security had Comrade Mike Ikeogwu as the Chairman of the electoral Committee and was presided over by the representative of the NLC President, Joe Ajaero.
