The Nigeria Police Force has apprehended Dr Fabian Ihekweme, a former commissioner and outspoken critic of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, at his residence in Abuja.
The arrest, which reportedly took place on Wednesday in the presence of his wife and children, led to his transfer to Owerri, Imo State, according to sources familiar with the incident.
Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju highlighted the case in a tweet on Thursday, condemning the arrest and describing it as a suppression of free expression.
Adeyanju stated, “Dr Fabian Ihekweme was taken by police officers yesterday in front of his wife and children at their home in Abuja and transported to Owerri. His offence: criticizing Governor Hope Uzodinma.”
He further criticized Uzodinma’s alleged intolerance toward dissent, drawing a comparison to Nigerian musician Burna Boy by stating, “Like Uzodinma, like Burna Boy.”
