Wantaregh Unongo was a true patriot – Former Benue governor Ortom

Former Governor of Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom, has paid tribute to the late elder statesman, Wantaregh Paul Iyorpuu Unongo, describing him as a towering figure in Nigeria’s history and a selfless patriot.

In a condolence message to the Unongo Kwangise family, Ortom hailed the contributions of the former Minister of Steel Development to Nigeria’s political and social evolution.

He highlighted Unongo’s instrumental role in laying the foundations for the country’s industrial development and his influence as a nationalist and intellectual voice.

“Wantaregh Unongo was among those who laid the foundation for industrial development in Nigeria and played a pivotal role in the making of the nation’s Constitution.

“Until his death, he was one of the last surviving nationalists who nurtured this country through its formative years,” Ortom said.

Ortom also praised Unongo’s leadership as Chairman of the Northern Elders Forum, where he championed unity, peace, and development across Nigeria.

“He reflected on Unongo’s enduring impact as a mentor and advisor during his tenure as Governor of Benue State.

“He was my role model and mentor. He provided me with invaluable guidance that contributed to the success of my administration.

“His vision of a united Nigeria, where all citizens are equally respected, will forever remain an inspiration,” Ortom added.

The former governor prayed for God to grant the deceased eternal rest and give the family strength to bear the loss.
