Senate rectifies mistake on Umar’s removal as CCT Chairman

Must read

The Senate has corrected an earlier error made on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, when it invoked Section 157(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), to remove Mr. Danladi Umar from his position as Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) due to alleged misconduct.

In a new resolution passed yesterday, the Senate affirmed the appropriate constitutional provisions, specifically Paragraph 17(3) Part 1 of the Fifth Schedule to the Constitution and Section 22(3) of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act, Cap C15, LFN 2004, as the legal basis for the removal of Mr. Umar. This was encapsulated in Senate Resolution S/RES/2/36/24.

Also, the Senate resolved to seek the concurrence of the House of Representatives for the resolution, in line with the relevant constitutional and statutory guidelines.

Senators also urged the public to disregard any misinformation stemming from the earlier resolution regarding the removal of Mr. Umar, emphasizing that the correction was necessary to prevent confusion.

The corrected motion followed a motion introduced by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), and was subsequently approved by the House of Representatives, as announced by Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

Senator Bamidele explained that the Senate had identified a “Freudian slip” in its initial resolution, which required rectification to ensure clarity moving forward.
