Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Retd), has urged northern elites to prioritize Nigeria’s unity over regional interests, cautioning against actions that could destabilize the country.
Gowon made the statement while hosting a delegation from the League of Northern Democrats (LND), led by Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, at the Yakubu Gowon Centre in Abuja.
He emphasized the need for collaboration among Nigeria’s diverse regions, warning that divisive politics could threaten national cohesion.
His remarks come amid calls for the presidency to return to the North, just a year after President Bola Tinubu, a southerner, assumed office. Despite these demands, Gowon stressed that the collective interest of the nation should outweigh regional considerations.
Reflecting on his time as Head of State, Gowon highlighted the difficulties of maintaining national unity during the Nigerian Civil War and urged northern leaders to champion development and peace across the country.
He expressed concern over persistent challenges in northern Nigeria, including insecurity, poverty, and drug abuse. Commending the LND’s efforts to address these issues, Gowon called on similar groups to promote unity and national progress.
“Whatever you do, prioritize the collective good of Nigeria,” Gowon said. “Collaboration among states is essential, but it should never undermine the nation’s unity. Your efforts give me hope for Nigeria’s future, and I remain at your service.”
Senator Shekarau praised Gowon as a symbol of unity and resilience, lauding his leadership during some of Nigeria’s most turbulent times.
