The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the death of five people in a boat mishap near Bennett Island in Warri South Local Government Area.

Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, reported that six passengers sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment, while 19 others were successfully rescued. However, one passenger remains missing as search efforts continue.

“Five were found dead, six persons injured and receiving treatment, 19 rescued, and one still missing,” Edafe stated.

In a separate incident, Edafe revealed that some robbery suspects were killed during a shootout with police officers near Warri. Weapons were recovered during the operation.

According to the statement, a surveillance team from the Ekpan Police Division arrested a suspect, Eto (31), near Effurun Roundabout with a bag containing 57 live cartridges.

His confession led officers to their hideout at Coconut Village along Warri/Sapele Road, where another suspect, Sunny (25), was apprehended.

Further investigation guided the operatives to the gang’s main camp in a forest near the 3 Battalion Barracks Army Estate in Effurun, leading to the recovery of arms and ammunition.
