The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has announced plans to shut down all polytechnics across Nigeria, effective December 2, 2024, if the Federal Government fails to address its demands.
Abubakar Abdullah, chairman of ASUP’s Kaduna Polytechnic chapter, disclosed this in a statement, citing the government’s failure to honor prior agreements with the union.
According to Abdullah, ASUP had issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Federal Government on October 6, 2024, highlighting critical issues affecting the growth and functionality of polytechnics nationwide.
However, he noted that the government has remained unresponsive despite the deadline expiring.
“Regrettably, as we passed the deadline of this ultimatum, we are yet to see the necessary actions from the Federal Government to address these pressing demands,” Abdullah stated.
He further warned that the union had no choice but to escalate the situation if their grievances remained unresolved, adding, “The silence and inaction have left us with no option but to consider the possibility of a total shutdown of our institutions, scheduled for December 2nd, 2024.”
