BREAKING: NNPC refutes claims on Port Harcourt refinery, highlights progress

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has reaffirmed the operational success of the Port Harcourt Refinery, addressing recent claims suggesting that the facility is not producing as expected.

In a statement issued by Olufemi Soneye Chief Corporate Communications Officer NNPC Ltd., NNPC expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their support and excitement over the restart of the Old Port Harcourt Refinery, which has overcome years of challenges. Currently, the refinery operates at 70% of its installed capacity, with plans to scale up to 90%.

According to the statement, daily outputs from the refinery include:

Straight-Run Gasoline (Naphtha): Blended into 1.4 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS)
Kerosene: 900,000 litres
Diesel (Automotive Gas Oil): 1.5 million litres
Low Pour Fuel Oil (LPFO): 2.1 million litres
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG): Additional volumes

NNPC clarified that the refinery uses crack C5, a blending component sourced from Indorama Petrochemicals, to meet gasoline standards.

This blending process, it noted, is a global standard for refineries to achieve compliance with product specifications.

The company also announced significant progress on the new Port Harcourt Refinery, with operations expected to begin soon, adding that no prior announcements would precede its commissioning.

NNPC called on Nigerians to support ongoing efforts under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing that false claims undermine the nation’s energy advancements.

“This milestone marks a critical step in building a stronger and self-sufficient energy sector,” the statement concluded.
