Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has approved a new minimum wage of N70,000 for state workers.
The decision followed two days of extensive discussions between the state government and representatives of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Union Negotiating Council.
Governor Uzodimma described the wage increase as a step toward enhancing worker welfare, highlighting the importance of better compensation in light of rising living costs and economic challenges.
In addition, the governor announced that payments of overdue gratuities to retirees from both local and state governments would begin on Tuesday, November 26. He also committed to increasing pension allowances once the ongoing pension audit is complete.
Workers on consolidated salaries, who currently earn the N70,000 minimum wage, will receive an additional 10 per cent pay increase.
An implementation committee, which includes members of the NLC, TUC, and state government, has confirmed the agreement on the minimum wage and necessary adjustments.
NLC and TUC leaders in Imo expressed gratitude to Governor Uzodimma, promising that workers would respond with greater dedication and productivity in appreciation of the state’s support.
