The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has successfully trained 137 Education Secretaries from Local Government Universal Basic Education Authorities (LGEAs) across the South-west region of Nigeria.
The training, held from November 18 to 22, 2024, in Ibadan, was part of the Commission’s 2023/2024 Teacher Professional Development (TPD) programme aimed at enhancing the capacities of the education secretaries in the effective implementation of the country’s primary education system.
Speaking at the event, UBEC’s Executive Secretary, Dr Hamid Bobboyi, emphasized the critical role that education secretaries play in the success of basic education, noting that the strength of Nigeria’s educational system is heavily reliant on the quality of primary education.
He was represented by the Commission’s Zonal Assistant Director, Mr Olusegun Akere, who stressed the need for education secretaries to continually improve their professional skills and management knowledge to better serve their local communities.
Dr Bobboyi highlighted that the education secretaries are essential to the administration of primary schools within their local governments and must ensure that schools are properly equipped and run efficiently.
He further stated that their role in overseeing educational delivery, including mentoring headteachers and providing professional leadership to teachers, is pivotal in improving learner outcomes across the region.
“The training is crucial for ensuring that basic education delivery meets high standards, as education secretaries are responsible for both administrative and professional leadership in their areas,” Bobboyi said. “This support helps ensure that education is delivered effectively at the grassroots level.”
In a goodwill message, Dr Nureni Adeniran, the Executive Chairman of Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB), commended the initiative, noting that the training aligns with the operational guidelines of the Universal Basic Education (UBE) programme.
Adeniran assured the education secretaries of continued support from the Board, emphasizing their vital role as the closest link to schools and their direct impact on educational service delivery.
The Director of Teacher Development at UBEC, Mr Aleshin Mayowa, also highlighted the Commission’s commitment to enhancing the effectiveness of education secretaries, underlining their key role in the successful implementation of the UBE programme.
This training session is expected to improve the professional capabilities of the education secretaries, enabling them to better manage education at the local level and contribute to the overall improvement of basic education in the South-west region.
