A’Ibom orders probe into boarding schools after viral video on poor meals, suspends principal

The Akwa Ibom State government has initiated an investigation into the quality of boarding facilities in secondary schools across the state after a disturbing video went viral, showing students at Presbyterian Senior Science College, Ididep, being served poor and unappetizing meals.

Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet, the state’s Commissioner for Education, announced the investigation in a statement issued yesterday.

She revealed that the principal of the school, Dr. Nse Sunday Umoh, has been suspended pending the results of the inquiry.

Etiebet explained that the investigation was prompted by an unannounced visit to the school, which raised concerns about the conditions of the boarding facilities.

She stated, “I have ordered a thorough investigation into the state of the boarding facilities at this school and the other 25 boarding secondary schools in the state.

“The review will cover hostels, dining areas, recreation zones, kitchen conditions, sanitary facilities, and meal menus.

“This will be led by the Permanent Secretaries of both the Ministry of Education and the State Secondary Education Board.”

While the state’s free education policy covers only tuition fees, Etiebet emphasized that the welfare of students remains a priority under the leadership of Governor Umo Eno.

“We urge parents, who no longer have to worry about tuition fees, to support their children in fulfilling other necessary responsibilities at school,” she said.

Etiebet assured the public that the state government is committed to upholding minimum standards for all public school facilities to ensure the well-being of students and staff.

She urged the public to be patient as the investigation continues, reiterating that Governor Umo Eno is steadfast in his commitment to improving education as outlined in his ARISE Agenda.
