Driver cheats death as 40ft container falls on car in Lagos

A driver narrowly avoided death on Monday morning when a 40-foot container fell on his Toyota Camry, with registration number LSR 293 HJ, along the Mile 2 route to Apapa Ports in Lagos.

Eyewitnesses reported that the accident occurred around 8:00 a.m., prompting a swift response from emergency services.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), alongside the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), coordinated efforts to rescue the driver.

The victim was successfully extracted from the crushed vehicle and rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention. Officers from the Kirikiri Police Division ensured the scene remained secure throughout the operation.

Following the rescue, the damaged Toyota Camry was removed, and work continued to clear the fallen container. LASTMA officers managed the site to minimize traffic disruptions and restore order.

LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, emphasized the dangers of improperly secured containers, urging truck drivers and owners to prioritize safety measures.

“Negligence in securing containers is a serious threat to lives and property. Adhering to safety protocols is essential to prevent these tragedies,” Bakare-Oki stated.

He reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to road safety, promising continued collaboration with stakeholders to ensure compliance with traffic laws and protect the public.
