2027: Lagos Speaker, Obasa joins governorship race, to face Seyi Tinubu, others

Must read

The race for Lagos State’s governorship seat in 2027 is heating up as political heavyweights begin positioning themselves as potential successors to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Prominent figures in the discussion include Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, Lagos East Senator Tokunbo Abiru, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, and Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu.

Adding to the growing list of contenders, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has reportedly declared his intention to join the race, according to ThisDay.

“Obasa, the longest-serving Speaker in the history of the Lagos State House of Assembly, is known for his deep grassroots support and political resilience. His connection with local communities, coupled with his alignment with the influential Mandate Group, makes him a formidable contender,” the report noted.

While Abiru’s corporate background and Gbajabiamila’s national prominence bring intrigue to the race, the report suggested their grassroots influence may not be as strong as that of Obasa or Hamzat.

The emerging contest highlights the dynamic political landscape in Lagos, with each candidate bringing unique strengths and alliances to the table. As the 2027 election approaches, the battle for Lagos promises to be one of the most closely watched in Nigeria’s political calendar.
