The Labour Party (LP) has refuted claims that it has entered into an agreement with President Bola Tinubu to support his re-election bid in 2027.
Reports circulating online suggested that the LP leadership had pledged to back Tinubu’s second-term aspirations if he chooses to run.
However, in a statement released on Friday, the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Mr. Obiora Ifoh, dismissed the allegations as baseless and unfounded.
“The Labour Party has consistently denied any form of partnership or collaboration with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections,” Ifoh stated.
He emphasized that the Labour Party remains a strong opposition force, with its National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, being one of the most vocal critics of the current administration.
“As a matter of fact, the Labour Party is the most visible opposition party today, and our National Chairman, Barrister Abure, has consistently criticized the present government,” he added.
Ifoh also highlighted the party’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its structure and enhance democracy in Nigeria. He mentioned the establishment of an Electoral Reform Committee aimed at promoting credible and transparent elections. Additionally, the party recently launched an e-membership registration platform, which has attracted thousands of new members.
“All these steps to reposition the party make the allegations of a secret agreement with President Tinubu or the APC absurd and unfortunate,” Ifoh said.
He further challenged Deji Adeyanju and others propagating the claims to provide concrete evidence of any such agreement. “We challenge anyone to present proof that the party leadership or Barrister Abure plans to work with Tinubu or the APC for the 2027 elections,” Ifoh declared.
