The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) has explained that its nationwide strike was prompted by the Federal Government’s refusal to address their demands.
Speaking on Wednesday, the MDCAN Chairman at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Owerri, Dr. Samuel Emdin, shared this during a briefing with journalists. He read from a statement signed by the National President, Dr. Mohammad Aminu Mohammad, and the National Secretary, Prof. Daiyabu Alhaji Ibrahim.
Dr. Emdin revealed that the crisis began after the National Executive Council (NEC) of MDCAN, during an extraordinary meeting, observed that the Federal Government had ignored issues related to what the association described as “reckless disregard for due process” by the Governing Council Chairman of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, regarding the appointment of a Vice-Chancellor.
The association demanded the immediate removal of the Governing Council Chairman for insubordination and non-compliance with the Ministry of Education’s directives.
They also called for the development of a standardized approach for advertising the Office of Vice-Chancellor, highlighting recent practices at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, as an example.
Additionally, the MDCAN urged the Federal Government to harmonize the retirement age of medical consultants, align the payment structure for medical lecturers with the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS), and settle outstanding arrears for Clinical Duty Allowance and CONMESS from 2023 and 2024.
Dr. Emdin concluded by stating that MDCAN’s National Executive Council will reconvene on November 24, 2024, to evaluate the progress made and decide the next course of action.
