Dr. Doyin Okupe, former Director-General of the Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign, has refuted allegations that the 2023 presidential election was rigged in favor of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement issued in Lagos on Thursday, Okupe described the claims by the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as unrealistic, citing APC’s electoral losses in key areas, including the home states of President Bola Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“How could Peter Obi win in Tinubu’s home state if the election was rigged? How could the APC lose in Buhari’s home base?” Okupe questioned.
He further acknowledged that while no election in Nigeria’s history has been entirely free from manipulation, the 2023 results were largely reflective of the voters’ will under the prevailing circumstances.
Expressing confidence in Tinubu’s leadership, Okupe described the President as a capable technocrat with a clear vision for national development.
Drawing comparisons to Chief Obafemi Awolowo, a revered statesman, Okupe commended Tinubu’s strategic approach to governance and his focus on transformative policies.
Acknowledging the economic challenges currently facing the nation, Okupe urged patience, noting that significant results from Tinubu’s policies would take at least two years to materialize.
“It will be a couple of years of pain and hardship, but Tinubu is committed to taking Nigeria to greater heights,” Okupe said, calling on Nigerians to support the President in navigating the country through its current difficulties.
