DHQ hails Simon Ekpa’s arrest, calls for extradition to Nigeria

Must read

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has commended the recent arrest of Simon Ekpa, a separatist leader, by Finnish authorities, describing it as a significant milestone in the fight against terrorism and insecurity in Nigeria.

In a statement released by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Chris Musa, expressed satisfaction with Ekpa’s detention and trial in Finland.

“The Chief of Defence Staff is pleased with his arrest in Finland and hopes this will pave the way for his extradition to Nigeria so that he can face justice,” Gusau stated.

Ekpa, a factional leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), had been declared wanted by the DHQ in March 2024, alongside 96 other individuals.

He is accused of terrorism, violent extremism, and secessionist activities that have fueled insecurity in Nigeria’s Southeast region.

The DHQ believes Ekpa, who operates from Finland, has been instrumental in inciting violence and destabilizing the region. His arrest is viewed as a critical step toward addressing these threats and ensuring accountability for his actions.
