The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has initiated legal proceedings against former Senator Andy Uba, alongside Crystal Uba and Benjamin Etu, over allegations of fraud.
The charges, filed under case number FHC/ABJ/CR/538/2024, were brought before Justice Inyang Ekwo at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The legal action, dated October 8 and filed on October 10 by Abdulrashid Sidi of the Police Force’s Legal and Prosecution Section, also named one Hajiya Fatima, who remains at large, as a co-conspirator.
Allegations of conspiracy, fraud
According to court documents, the defendants allegedly conspired in 2022 to deceive George Uboh by falsely claiming they could secure the position of Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for a sum of N400 million.
The charge states that this representation was knowingly false and violated provisions of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud-Related Offences Act, 2006.
Specifically, the accused are charged with conspiracy and obtaining money under pretences, punishable under Sections 1(3) and 8 of the Act.
Evidence, witnesses
The allegations stem from a petition submitted by Uboh to the IGP in April 2023, which included documentary evidence and voice recordings. Uboh described the evidence as “overwhelming and irrefutable.” Six witnesses have reportedly been lined up to testify against Uba and the other defendants.
Court proceedings
The arraignment, originally scheduled for November 13, was postponed to February 18, 2025, due to challenges in serving court documents to the defendants. M.L. Anthony, representing the IGP, informed the court that the defendants had evaded service despite being granted administrative bail.
Anthony also disclosed that the defendants had previously obtained a court order protecting them from being brought to trial, delaying the case since 2023. With the lifting of the order, charges were finally filed, and the matter now awaits the defendants’ plea.
Justice Ekwo adjourned the case to allow for proper arraignment and ensure the defendants appeared before the court.
