Shehu Sani advocates tax reform, decries VAT inequity among states

Must read

Former Senator Shehu Sani has called for support for the proposed tax reform bill, citing the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Chairman’s revelation about Value Added Tax (VAT) distribution among Nigerian states.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sani highlighted the FIRS Chairman’s disclosure to the House of Representatives that Lagos, Rivers, Oyo, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) account for 70% of the nation’s VAT revenue.

He described the situation as “unjust” and a strong reason to back the reform.

He pointed out the disparity in VAT allocation, using the example of MTN, where most of its VAT is paid in Lagos despite its services being utilized nationwide.

“This reform is about equity, fairness, and ensuring resources are allocated to all states,” Sani stated.

Addressing critics of the bill, Sani urged them to “remove their political lenses” and examine the document carefully.

He dismissed claims that the bill would perpetuate inequality, insisting that it is designed to end the “prevailing tax injustice in the country.”
