Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered a surprising 2-1 defeat to Rwanda in their final Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group D qualifier on Monday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Despite already securing their spot for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, having topped the group with 11 points, the Super Eagles were undone by a determined Rwandan side that mounted a strong comeback.
Nigeria took the lead in the 59th minute when Samuel Chukwueze found the net, lifting the spirits of the home crowd.
However, Rwanda responded swiftly with Aimable Mutinzi equalizing in the 72nd minute.
Just three minutes later, Imanishimwe Nshuti completed the turnaround, scoring the winning goal to seal a remarkable victory for Rwanda.
The first half ended in a stalemate, with both teams missing several chances. Nigeria’s initial second-half dominance gave way to defensive errors, allowing Rwanda to capitalize and claim all three points.
Nshuti, who was later booked for time-wasting, emerged as the match’s hero.
Despite the loss, Nigeria finished top of Group D with three wins, two draws, and one loss, earning 11 points. Benin, also with 8 points, secured second place on goal difference, while Rwanda joined them in the tournament with the same points total.
Libya ended at the bottom with 5 points.
