Policeman killed as gunmen attack Reps member’s convoy

A police officer has been killed and another seriously injured following an attack on the convoy of a federal lawmaker in Abia State by unknown gunmen.

The incident reportedly occurred at Ubakala, located in the Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State.

The convoy belonged to Hon. Ginger Obinna Onwusibe, the representative for Isiala Ngwa North/South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

Onwusibe, who chairs the House Committee on Financial Crimes, was not present in the convoy at the time of the attack.

The ambush took place around 9 p.m. on Sunday night while the policemen were on duty. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the attackers, dressed in black and reportedly wearing police jackets, intercepted the convoy. The vehicle, a Toyota Corolla, was occupied by two police officers and a driver.

The gunmen allegedly fired on the police officers after they identified themselves. One officer was killed on the spot, while the other was critically injured and feared dead.

A source disclosed that the gunmen fled the scene as reinforcements from the nearby Ubakala Police Division engaged them in a shootout.
