President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Sunday for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he will participate in the 19th G20 Leaders’ Summit, scheduled for November 18-19.
Tinubu’s attendance follows an invitation from Brazil’s President and current G20 Chair, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
According to a statement from Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, the summit will gather leaders from the world’s 20 largest economies, alongside representatives from the European Union, the African Union, and major global financial institutions.
The theme for this year’s summit is “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet.” Discussions will center on critical issues including hunger and poverty eradication, reforms in global governance, sustainable development, and energy transition.
The statement emphasized Nigeria’s ongoing advocacy for reform in global governance institutions, particularly its bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
“President Tinubu will also engage in bilateral talks on the sidelines of the summit to further Nigeria’s socio-economic reform agenda,” the statement added.
The president will be accompanied by key government officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar; the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha; the Minister of Art, Tourism, Culture, and Creativity, Hannatu Musawa; the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi; and the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed.
President Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria after completing his engagements at the summit.
