Voting materials and ad-hoc staff from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) arrived early at most polling stations in Irele Local Government Area for the ongoing gubernatorial election in Ondo State.
According to reports, INEC officials began setting up polling units as early as 7 a.m., aiming to start voting at the scheduled time of 8:30 a.m.
At Polling Units 003 and 019 of Anglican Primary School, Ward 8, voters were seen verifying their names on the voter register, while INEC staff completed preparations.
However, concerns about potential electoral malpractice have surfaced, with reports suggesting instances of vote buying at various locations. Observers noted that representatives from key political parties were spotted carrying bags allegedly filled with cash to influence voters.
Some voters admitted they were open to accepting money in exchange for their votes.
A voter, who chose to remain anonymous, shared with Tribune: “This has been the norm for years. If they offer money, why not take it? Everyone is just trying to make ends meet.”
The election has drawn significant attention, with security forces deployed across the state to maintain order. Despite concerns over electoral malpractices, many residents remain hopeful for a fair and transparent voting process.
Voting is expected to continue throughout the day, with results anticipated later.
