Ex-councilor ambushed, killed by gunmen in Ogun

Gunmen believed to be cultists fatally shot former Abeokuta North Local Government councillor Mutiu Akinbami near the Brewery area in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Akinbami, commonly known as “Egor,” was reportedly shot in the head while riding a motorcycle with his son on Friday.

An anonymous source told the Punch that the attack occurred around 6:30 p.m., between Brewery Bus Stop and Olomoore Junction.

The attackers, suspected cultists, allegedly followed Akinbami from his home in Olomoore Federal Housing Estate in a tinted Toyota Hilux. Upon catching up with him, they opened fire.

SP Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the state police, confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday.

According to Odutola, the Divisional Police Officer of Lafenwa received a report around 6:40 p.m. that Akinbami, a resident of Olomore Housing Estate, had been shot near the Brewery area while riding a motorcycle.

Witnesses stated that one of the masked assailants in an unregistered white Hilux shot him from behind.

The police quickly responded, sending patrol teams to the scene and transporting Akinbami to Ijaiye General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Odutola also revealed that early investigations identified Akinbami as a prominent member of the Eiye confraternity who had once held a leadership position at the Federal College of Education in Osiele, Abeokuta, and was on a wanted list.

Several arrests have been made, and more information will be shared as the investigation progresses.

This incident follows the recent killing of Adeleke Adeyinka, an All Progressives Congress councilorship candidate for Abeokuta South Local Government, who was also shot by suspected cultists last month in Oke Ilewo, Abeokuta.
