The Court of Appeal has overturned Musiliu Akinsanya’s, widely known as MC Oluomo, position as National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and confirmed Tajudeen Baruwa as the union’s re-elected leader.
Last week, the NURTW’s Southwest Zone elected MC Oluomo as president during its Quadrennial Delegate Conference held at the Zonal Secretariat in Osogbo, Osun State.
Since then, MC Oluomo, who is associated with President Bola Tinubu, has assumed duties at the union’s national headquarters in Abuja.
However, court documents obtained on Friday by Sahara Reporters revealed that the Appeal Court upheld a prior ruling from the National Industrial Court in Abuja on March 11, 2024, which confirmed Baruwa as the legitimate president.
The judgment, handed down on November 8 by a panel of three judges—Justices Hamma Akawu Barka, Nnamdi Okwy Dimgba, and Asmau Ojuolape Akanbi—rejected the appeal against Baruwa’s leadership, awarding ₦100,000 in costs to the appellants.
The judgment, as per an order signed by Deputy Chief Registrar Judith M. Jabbe and read by Justice Barka, dismissed the appeal, finding no merit in the challenge.
The case (CA/ABJ/CV/293/2024) involved appellants including Alh. Najeem Usman Yasin and Alh. Tajudeen Badru Agbede, among others, versus Baruwa and his team.
According to statements from Baruwa’s lawyer, Tolu Babaleye, Baruwa has contested MC Oluomo’s installation as president, arguing it disregards rulings from both the National Industrial Court and the Court of Appeal, which have established Baruwa’s position as the legitimate leader of the NURTW.
