Ahead of the Ondo State off-season gubernatorial elections set for Saturday, November 16, 2024, the Inspector-General of Police, Egbetokun, has announced a robust security framework to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process.
To spearhead this initiative, IGP Egbetokun has appointed Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) Sylvester Abiodun Alabi as the Elections Coordinator.
DIG Alabi will oversee the comprehensive security arrangements, ensuring order throughout the election period.
He will be supported by AIG Bennett Igweh and CP Tunji Disu, who have been designated as AIG and CP for Elections, respectively.
A key part of the security measures includes a restriction on all forms of vehicular movement from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Election Day.
Exceptions will be made for essential services, including ambulances, accredited media personnel, and emergency response teams. This restriction is intended to minimize disruptions and maintain a secure voting environment.
In addition, all security aides and escorts for VIPs are prohibited from accompanying their principals to polling stations and collation centres.
Unauthorized security personnel and quasi-security groups will not be allowed to operate during the election, and the use of sirens by non-essential vehicles is strictly banned.
To accommodate all voters, special provisions will be in place to ensure polling station access for persons with disabilities, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and others with mobility challenges.
The Nigeria Police Force has also set up dedicated helplines for inquiries and incident reporting, which will be publicized shortly.
Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activities that could undermine the electoral process.
Reaffirming its commitment to a secure election environment, the Police will work closely with the military and other federal security agencies to maintain order.
The collaborative effort from all security and government stakeholders aims to ensure a fair, safe, and peaceful election in Ondo State.
