BREAKING: Gov Okpebholo directs immediate freezing of Edo bank accounts

Must read

On Thursday, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo directed the immediate suspension of all transactions from state-owned bank accounts.

This directive, which takes effect immediately, requires strict adherence from commercial banks and leaders within state Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), according to a statement released by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor.

Governor Okpebholo emphasized that any official or bank failing to comply with this mandate will face severe consequences. “All state bank accounts in commercial banks are to remain frozen, with no withdrawals allowed until further notice,” the statement read.

He called on MDAs to ensure full compliance as investigations and reconciliations are conducted. Once completed, the governor will decide on the appropriate next steps, but for now, the freeze remains in effect.

In addition, Governor Okpebholo has instructed that the Ministry of Roads and Bridges be renamed the Ministry of Works, noting that the previous administration under Godwin Obaseki, which introduced the title, had not completed significant road or bridge projects.

The statement added that Okpebholo found it inappropriate to maintain the name given the lack of completed infrastructure. Relevant agencies are expected to update records to reflect this change immediately.

Governor Okpebholo also hinted at additional reforms, stating that more actions from the prior administration would be reviewed, with further decisions to follow in the interest of the state.
