Air Peace Abuja-Lagos flight makes emergency stop after bird strike, passengers evacuated

An Air Peace flight from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja to Lagos made an emergency stop on the runway Thursday morning following a bird strike, prompting the evacuation of passengers.

The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m., just before takeoff. The abrupt halt startled passengers, with reports of panic and some individuals screaming due to the sudden stoppage.

Prominent human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, shared his experience on Facebook, explaining that the plane’s captain attributed the emergency stop to a bird strike.

“We have been deboarded and are now waiting for either a replacement aircraft or repairs,” Effiong wrote. He added, “Thankfully, it happened before takeoff. It could have been much worse.”

Effiong also questioned the availability of bird detection radar at the domestic wing of the airport, raising concerns about the airport’s safety measures.

Following the incident, Air Peace replaced the faulty aircraft to allow passengers to continue their journey. The Head of Corporate Communications at Air Peace, Dr. Ejike Ndiulo, confirmed the bird strike and explained that the ramp return was a standard safety procedure. He assured that all passengers disembarked safely and without issues.

“We have dispatched a replacement aircraft to minimize disruptions and ensure passengers reach their destination without further delay,” Ndiulo said. “We appeal for the patience and understanding of our valued customers affected by this incident and any subsequent flight delays.”

He reiterated Air Peace’s commitment to maintaining the highest safety standards and providing a reliable travel experience for all passengers.
