Akeredolu family snubs APC, endorses SDP Candidate for Ondo governorship election

Must read

The family of the late Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, has declared its support for Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate, ahead of the state’s governorship election scheduled for November 16.

The endorsement was made alongside ASEI Human Rights of Nigeria, a prominent human rights group. Speaking on behalf of the family, Oluwafemi Akeredolu, the late governor’s younger brother, emphasized the importance of prioritizing the candidate’s character over party loyalty.

“It’s not about the party; it’s about the individual running for office,” Oluwafemi stated, criticizing the prevailing trend of voting strictly based on party affiliation. He argued that voters should choose candidates based on their competence and integrity rather than blindly following a political party. He expressed confidence in Akingboye’s ability to bring much-needed change to Ondo State.

Oluwafemi added, “My brother was a strong APC supporter, but this election is beyond party lines. What has the party done for us as Nigerians? It’s time to vote for people based on their merit, not the party they represent. If INEC changes the voting system to prioritize individuals over parties, many candidates would struggle.”

Highlighting the potential of Ondo State’s seaport, Oluwafemi lamented its underutilization, despite his late brother securing the port’s certificate before his passing. “The Ondo seaport is one of the deepest in the region, capable of handling large vessels that can’t dock elsewhere. Yet, it remains unexplored. The current administration is considering handing over control of the port to foreign interests, but we can’t allow that,” he said.

He urged voters to back Akingboye, assuring them that noticeable improvements would begin within six months of his administration. “Ondo State needs change, and Otunba Bamidele Akingboye is the leader to bring it. On Saturday, we must vote for SDP and set the state on a new path.”

In a related development, Oba Adewumi Babalola, National President of ASEI Human Rights, also voiced his support for Akingboye. “I am here with a message for the people of Ondo State. God revealed the next governor to me, and it is time for a change in leadership. I urge everyone to vote for SDP’s Otunba Bamidele Akingboye,” Babalola stated.

The family’s decision to back the SDP candidate instead of the ruling APC is seen as a significant political move ahead of the highly anticipated gubernatorial election.
