Must read

Suspected members of the outlawed Eastern Security Network (ESN) and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) reportedly attacked a military checkpoint in Abia State, resulting in the deaths of three soldiers.

The clash, involving soldiers from the 14 Brigade in Ohafia, took place at a checkpoint near the Carpenter Shed, Ekenobizi, in Umuopara, close to the boundary between Abia and Imo States.

The attack occurred around 6:18 a.m. on Wednesday, causing panic among nearby residents and travellers.

The checkpoint had been established the previous Thursday to bolster security in the area.

According to sources, the gunmen launched a surprise assault, eventually dismantling the checkpoint after overpowering the soldiers.

Previously, armed men were repelled by the 144 Battalion when they attempted an attack on a police checkpoint along the Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway in Ukwa West, forcing them to retreat toward Imo State.

In a statement, Lt. Col. Jonah Unuakhalu Onah, representing the Joint Task Force Southeast Operation UDO KA, confirmed the attack on troops stationed along the Umuahia-Owerri road in Umuahia South.

The statement indicated that although soldiers forced the attackers to flee, two troops lost their lives in the ensuing confrontation. The attackers abandoned a Sienna and a Lexus Jeep at the scene.

The Joint Task Force urged the public, particularly those in Abia State, to provide credible information that could lead to the capture of the attackers.

They also reiterated their commitment to safeguarding lives and property according to global standards and operational guidelines.
