Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury and head of the Anglican Church worldwide, announced his resignation on Tuesday following an inquiry revealing his failure to swiftly report repeated physical and sexual abuse committed by a volunteer at Christian summer camps.
In a statement, Welby expressed he was leaving his position “with sorrow” and had “sought the gracious permission of His Majesty The King” to step down.
The decision came amid growing pressure since the report’s release last Thursday, with increasing public calls for his resignation.
A petition launched by members of the Church of England’s General Synod had gathered over 13,000 signatures by the time Welby made his announcement.
