Police in Adamawa State have arrested a 20-year-old man named Abubakar Abdu for allegedly stabbing a woman, Azumi Abubakar, to death while attempting to steal maize from her storage.
According to police reports, the incident occurred on November 7, 2024, in Gengle village, located in the Mayo-Belwa Local Government Area.
Abdu reportedly said he resorted to theft out of hunger, and when Azumi caught him in the act, he fatally stabbed her.
The state’s police spokesperson, SP Suleiman Nguroje, confirmed the arrest to reporters on Monday, stating that the case is being treated as culpable homicide.
Nguroje assured that Abdu would be charged in court following the investigation.
Nguroje explained, “On 10/11/2024, the Adamawa State Police Command, as part of its campaign against violent crime, apprehended Abubakar Abdu, who is a resident of Gengle village, for fatally stabbing Azumi Abubakar, 30, during a maize theft.”
He added that around 3 a.m. on November 7, Abdu entered the victim’s home to steal maize.
When Azumi saw and identified him by name, he reacted by stabbing her, resulting in her death.
The arrest was made after a complaint from the victim’s husband, and authorities plan to proceed with charges once the investigation concludes.
