Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has expressed disappointment over the exclusion of the state government from the All Progressives Congress (APC) plans regarding the inauguration of Governor-elect Monday Okpebholo.
Obaseki, who will hand over to Okpebholo on November 12, 2024, after winning the September 21 governorship election against Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), criticized the APC for not involving the state government in the process.
While swearing in the caretaker committee of the PDP in Edo on Friday, Obaseki revealed that he had not received an invitation for the inauguration, describing the APC’s action as “lawless.”
He noted that the state government should be responsible for organizing the inauguration.
“Somebody has to be sworn in. Sworn into a government that already exists. You cannot just come from nowhere and start a government. There is already a government in place, and there’s a proper way things should be done,” he said.
Obaseki further pointed out that while the inauguration is scheduled for Tuesday, the state government was not involved in the preparation. “It is absurd when people behave as if there are no laws in this country. Sometimes, I wonder, are we okay as a country? We are guided by laws, constitution, and established procedures,” he remarked.
The governor reiterated that he was not invited to the inauguration, likening the situation to the creation of a new state and government.
