The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended 21 individuals in Benin City, Edo State, on suspicion of internet fraud.

The arrests took place on Tuesday, following operations conducted by EFCC officials acting on credible intelligence linking the suspects to online fraudulent activities.

In a public statement shared on its X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, the EFCC explained that the arrests were part of ongoing efforts to combat cybercrime in Benin City.

The agency highlighted that actionable intelligence led them to various locations across Benin City, where the suspects were apprehended.

A range of high-value items was seized during the operation, including ten luxury vehicles, several laptops, and numerous mobile phones.

These items are believed to have been used in connection with the alleged fraud schemes.

The EFCC has emphasized its commitment to thoroughly investigating the suspects before bringing formal charges against them in court.

“The suspects will be charged in court as soon as investigations are concluded,” the statement added, indicating the agency’s intention to ensure a comprehensive legal process.

This recent crackdown aligns with the EFCC’s broader mission to address cybercrime across Nigeria, a persistent issue that continues to affect both domestic and international victims.

Over the past several months, the EFCC has increased its focus on cyber-related offences, with regular raids and arrests aimed at curbing online fraud.

The EFCC has urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious online activities as part of a collective effort to combat cybercrime in Nigeria.
