You don’t beg people to fight corruption – EFCC boss

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has emphasized that combating corruption in Nigeria cannot be done with leniency or compromise.

Olukoyede made this statement during a courtesy visit by the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), Dr. Abdullahi Usman Bello, at the EFCC headquarters in Jabi on Tuesday.

In a press release issued by the Commission’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, Olukoyede expressed his commitment to collaborating with the CCB in the fight against corruption, as well as economic and financial crimes. He stressed the importance of collective efforts to strengthen the fight against corruption in the country.

While acknowledging the complementary roles of the EFCC and the CCB, Olukoyede emphasized the need to enhance their cooperation. He stated, “I don’t view this as a mere courtesy visit; rather, it is an opportunity to strengthen our existing collaboration. Both agencies are aligned in their mandates to fight corruption and financial crimes.”

He further highlighted the necessity of rigorous investigations and prosecutions, particularly concerning the CCB’s functions.

“To fight corruption in Nigeria, we cannot use kid gloves; that approach will never work. Corruption is universally recognized as detrimental, and we must be resolute in our actions. We don’t beg or plead with people; we must take firm actions,” Olukoyede said.

He also pointed out that while many desire a better Nigeria, such a change will not happen without collective effort.

“A better Nigeria won’t simply appear overnight; it requires hard work. We cannot expect foreigners to resolve our issues. It is up to us, and we have the capacity to address these challenges ourselves.
